Waxing or Sharpening ?

Wax more often than sharpen, especially at the start of the season, artificial sow are very abrasives and quickly whiten the base, the wax nourishes the base, protects it while restoring its original luster. (Note: before storing for the summer it is also recommended to wax the equipment)

When to sharpen Skis or Snowboards?

In general we are talk about sharpening at the 10 ski outings, however it depends on the outing conditions, .. 10 ski outings on an icy surface and 10 ski outings on powder snow will not wear out the edges of the same way.

About

What could be more pleasant than a nice ski outing when it slides like wet soap and it bites into the track like an ice skate. Well-tuned equipment makes a world of difference.

Being a winter season enthusiast, I have been tuning skis and snowboards for many years. Full-time resident of Baie-Saint-Paul since 2022, I decided to extend this service to interested people.

I do iron waxing, sharpening and certain types of repairs. I use quality wax made in Canada, whose additives respect the environment(without harming performance), the wax does not contain PFCs (Perfluorocarbons) either.

The material

Being a fan of "DIY" (Do it yourself), I'm listing here the tools that I use for ski and snowboard tuning in case you decide to start waxing and sharpening your equipment. Please note that some of these links are sponsored links to various sites and products and tools (that I use).

The waxing iron

An essential, after having tried a few, my favorite remains the "Dakine Adjustable". Some people will say that an old iron does the job.. error the temperature is not constant on across entire surface of the iron..

The ski vise

To do a good job, the equipment must be well maintained, personally I use the "Ski Man" vises.. in steel made in Italy and very affordable. No need to spend $300, the important thing is that it holds well without damaging equipment.

The wax

For the waxes there is a very large choice of brands, however you have to ideally select waxes that are eco-friendly (PFC-free) as they end up in the nature. I mainly use the waxes from the great Canadian company Beaverwax.

The brushes

Personally I use 3 brushes, one in brass to pre-clean the bases, one in nylon to remove excess wax that the scraper wax left (important for backcountry skiers) and finally a horsehair brush horse to give a glossy finish.

Wax scraper

It takes various dimensions, the largest for snowboards and narrower ones for skis. It is also important to have one that has the notch corner for cleaning edges (squares). I really like those from the Canadian company Beaverwax.

Files and stones

Once everything is waxed, it's time to sharpen and for this there is a wide range of files and stones on the market. These files and stones are combined with various guides to provide the adequate angles at the edge and at the base, .. yes again Beaverwax :-)

Fixed edge guides

These are the ones I prefer, very robust, in aluminum and made to last, they will always keep the right angle. There are some with attachment for the file and without attachment, I have both types but I prefer the one with the clip because the file is well secured and is less likely to move compared to that with which pliers must be used.

Ski base edge guide

Multi-use guides can do the job, but personally I prefer to use a specific guide for the base. This type of guide does a better job, has a gliding angle which ensures uniform hold, I use Wintersteiger on board adjustable base.

Ski multi-use guides

These guides are master keys, they have several possible angles, the base and the edges. It's good when you sharpen a pair of skis from time to time, but with intensive use a "loose" can ended up being created, I have one of the first versions from Wintersteiger, the green plastic one, it has since been replaced by the Pro Sharp.

Ski Side Planer

We use the planer during the very first sharpening to cut the side walls thus allowing exposure of the edges. Excess material harms sharpening and clogs files and stones. I use the classic Swix, very affordable and does the job perfectly.

The P-Tex

Necessary for repairing damaged bases, P-Tex can easily be found in kits, which often includes white and black sticks, abrasive papers, the scraper metal as well as instructions allowing anyone to easily repair their equipment.

Cut resistant gloves

Back and forth movement on sharp edges is dangerous, precautions are required and cut-resistant gloves are required. I've tried them in various textures and at various prices, The most expensive ones are not the best. Level 5 protection, less than $3 a pair is hard to beat.

Ski base cleaner

I love the smell of citrus fruits and eco-responsible products so for me the Dakine Eco Friendly Base Cleaner is the perfect degreaser. Very effective against dirt stuck to the base, this cleaner combined with a good cloth and the brass brush does a very nice job.

Diamond stones and others

Diamond stones for polishing edges, rubber bands for holding ski brakes, brushes for cleaning files, various types of sandpaper for cleaning certain stains, abrasive pads for wax polishing, etc.. etc..

The apron

After cutting up some clothes, I decided to get a small leather apron, something not too expensive, multifunctional and comfortable. I wear it during sharpening sessions and take it off during waxing sessions.
